Senior Design Engineer

Location: Bedford

Type: Permanent, Full-time

Hours: Office Hours, With 1pm Fri Finish

Salary: Up to £52,000

Our client, a well-established engineering manufacturer, is seeking an experienced Senior  Design Engineer to join their growing engineering team. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a highly structured, quality-driven environment designing mechanical products from concept through to manufacture.

You will be responsible for delivering high-quality mechanical design solutions, supporting both new product development and existing product improvements, while working within a regulated quality framework.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing mechanical components and assemblies for manufacture and assembly
  • Producing 3D models and 2D technical drawings using CAD systems (NX, Inventor, AutoCAD)
  • Performing engineering calculations including FEA and FMEA for performance and safety validation
  • Managing design projects from concept through to production
  • Supporting quotation work through layout design and technical investigation
  • Driving cost-effective design through Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VAVE)
  • Creating technical documentation including material specifications, manuals, and reports
  • Producing and maintaining Bills of Materials
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and engineering best practice
  • Working cross-functionally with internal teams, suppliers, and customers (UK and international travel may be required)
  • These duties align with working in a structured ISO 9001 design and manufacturing environment.

Skills & Experience:

  • 5–10 years’ experience in a senior design role.
  • Minimum 5 years’ mechanical design experience in a 3D CAD environment
  • Experience with FEA software preferred
  • Experience in rotating machinery or similar mechanical systems desirable
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Positive, collaborative team player mindset

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) preferred
  • Minimum HNC / HND with relevant industry experience considered
  • IEng registration desirable but not essential
  • Strong working knowledge of 3D CAD essential
