If you’re not using LinkedIn to support your job search, you could be missing out on opportunities. Recruiters use LinkedIn every day to find and connect with candidates, including those who aren’t actively job hunting. Here’s how to make your profile stand out.
Start with the basics. Use a clear, professional profile photo and make sure your headline is more than just your job title. Include your specialism or sector, such as “Experienced administrator with a background in office support” or “Customer service professional in retail and logistics.”
Write a short summary in the ‘About’ section that explains who you are and what you’re looking for. Mention your strengths, the types of roles you’re interested in, and what makes you a great hire. Keep it friendly and authentic.
Include keywords that relate to the roles you want. Recruiters often search LinkedIn using terms like “warehouse operative,” “data entry,” or “finance assistant.” Make sure these appear naturally in your profile, especially in job titles and descriptions.
Under each role in your experience section, include a few bullet points that highlight your main responsibilities and any achievements. Focus on results where possible, such as “Improved stock management processes” or “Handled 50+ customer enquiries per day.”
Make use of the Skills section by listing the tools, software, and soft skills you’re confident in. Ask former colleagues to endorse you. This helps build credibility and shows recruiters that others value your strengths.
Let recruiters know you’re open to work by using the “Open to Work” feature. You can customise this so only recruiters see it and include the types of roles and locations you’re open to.
Be active on LinkedIn. Engage with posts from companies you’d like to work for, comment on industry news, and share relevant articles. These small actions can help raise your profile and show you’re engaged in your field.
